Platform to support the relatives of caregivers - TOPIC
In the area of Ambient Assisted Living (AAL), avinotec collaborates with the Department "Information Systems and New Media" of the University of Siegen.
The focus is on the support for caregivers and caretakers by electronic services and systems. These should guarantee optimal support in the user's immediate environment to ensure and support him in everyday situations.
The research focus of this project lies on the adaptation and development of systems that support intensely an age-appropriate life. This is reflected in the acronym of the project:
The Online Platform for Informal Caregivers - TOPIC.
Due to demographic changes, the integration of supporting technological and technical activities and systems will become more relevant and important. Key research activities are the preparation and provision of high-quality teaching and learning material as well as the interactive exchange via video and video chat, supported by state-of-the-art sociological research.

Father and daughter live in different places. That is exactly why relatives and people who need care want a simple and appropriate online communication platform. Whether you set up one or more cameras at your family member’s site - the contact with both parties is made quickly.

Transportation Research
Co-operations with 'Fraunhofer' (FhG) 'Institute for Transportation and Infrastructure Systems' (IVI) in Dresden as well as with 'Institute for Road Engineering' (ISAC) at RWTH Aachen (University) enable us to access state-of-the-art research in traffic analysis. We need high-quality quantitative and qualitative methods to provide the following parameters for traffic forecasts:
- Counting of moving objects,
- deduction of traffic volumes,
- speed,
- occupied areas and
- history of the measured data.
Reliable classification of vehicles into corresponding classes (motorcycle, car, truck, towing a trailer) - based solely on optical methods - is still challenging in real operations, even if algorithms have been developed theoretically.
New algorithms use vehicle tracking in combination with driver identification. Avinotec actively assists and supports this research.
The Moving Picture Experts Group - MPEG
The Moving Picture Experts Group (Expertengruppe für "bewegte Bilder") develops Coding Standards for Audio and Video (Buzzwords are MPEG4, MP3). In order to keep our developments up to date, avinotec works with the MPEG committee in order to incorporate their own experiences into the development process for new standards as well as participating on the latest developments.
Today, with IT, consumer electronics and technology makes a increasingly significant part of the entertainment. Therefore, it is especially important to work with principles and standards to keep all modules compatible.
Since its start in 1988, the MPEG working group of the ISO has published numerous standards, always from the point of view, to allow the user an even better audio and video experience. In an environment with increasingly complex technologies, the collaboration of information technologies, Consumer electronics, entertainment and telecommunications products, and their contents are not necessarily a must have. The proven MPEG standards guarantee that fruits of industry research and innovations are used to the benefit of all.

CampusSource
CampusSource is an initiative of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and helps educational institutions and others to create infrastructures for computer- and network-based teaching and learning for the use of new media. The aim is to combine the attempts and efforts of individual university projects together and CampusSource as a platform provides the technical basis for a virtual university. CampusSource gives them free of charge - mainly developed at universities - open source software. The software is offered on the campus source exchange bourse. It is subject to the license terms of the General Public License (GPL) and had to match a defined quality standard.
